Artwork Statement
My practice moves across painting, illustration, and poetic visual storytelling, shaped by philosophy, childhood memory, and the subtle emotional textures of everyday life. I am interested in softness not as fragility, but as a way of attending to what is in transition — to becoming, belonging, and the quiet transformations that often escape notice.
In-between reflects this sensibility through a visual language of suspension and relation. Rather than presenting a fixed narrative, the work inhabits a threshold: between cultures, between states of feeling, and between ways of knowing. This in-between space is central to my practice, shaped by intercultural experience and by an ongoing dialogue between Eastern and Western thought.
In the context of Distributed Worlds, the work responds to lives that are dispersed across languages, memories, and social environments. Painting becomes a space to hold these movements without forcing them into resolution. It invites viewers into a slower encounter with ambiguity, where softness and uncertainty become generative rather than incomplete.
Artist Bio
Yvaine Hou is a Chinese-born artist based in Melbourne, working across painting, illustration, and poetic visual storytelling. Her practice is shaped by philosophy, a/r/tography, childhood memory, and the subtle rhythms of everyday life. Drawing on both Eastern and Western thought, as well as lived intercultural experience, she creates works that explore softness, becoming, belonging, and transformation. She is currently a PhD Candidate at Monash University, where research and creative practice meet in an ongoing dialogue between art, culture, and lived experience.
