Artwork Statement
Matthew Chan explores identity, connection, and belonging through illustration and visual storytelling. Using recurring motifs of the body and face, he reflect on queer experiences, emotional vulnerability, and the relationships that shape everyday life.
Art plays a central role in Matthew Chan's wellbeing, providing a space to process emotions, navigate personal experiences, and communicate feelings that often resist language. Through storytelling, he transform these reflections into images that invite empathy and dialogue.
More recently, illustrated travel journals have become an extension of the practice, documenting not only places but also the people, memories, and emotions connected to each journey. Whether creating personal or commissioned work, Matthew Chan encourages viewers to pause, reflect, and find moments of connection within their own experiences.
