Artwork Statement
With automative, intuitive strokes, and intricate details, my artistic practice examines human existence and its connection to the natural landscape, exploring how our physical presence shapes and is shaped by our environments. As an artist, I investigate the relationship between individual experiences and wider societal narratives, drawing inspiration from both popular culture and personal encounters. My work depicts human figures within surreal or abstracted landscapes, creating scenes that reflect the tension between the familiar and the otherworldly. By placing figures in raw, often chaotic settings—whether urban environments, imagined worlds, or elements of an environmental context—I aim to evoke an expression of fractured existence and tenuous connection, as well as an intergenerational conversation.
My practice invites viewers to engage with these fragmented realities as well as their own place within the larger social and environmental context.
Artist Bio
Jonathon Fisher is a Melbourne-based artist working in drawing and printmaking. A 2024 graduate of the University of Melbourne, his work reflects a deep engagement with landscape, memory, and Australia's colonial and ecological histories. His practice often explores his family’s ties to Portland, Victoria—the site of Australia’s first whaling industry—using art to confront the legacy of environmental harm. Through layered mark-making and symbolic imagery, Fisher creates visual reflections on place, identity, and the entangled relationships between human history and the natural world.
