Artwork Statement
Imogen Gailitis-Gerraty’s artistic practice centres on the transformation of the self as a means to explore identity, individuality, and the theatricality of daily life. Using photography as both documentation and creative tool, she constructs striking images in which she becomes someone else—someone known, imagined, or remembered. Through the use of makeup, costume, prosthetics, and digital editing, she creates exaggerated, layered portraits that blend performance, humour, and vulnerability.
Her work embraces the fluidity of self-image, reflecting on how personal and cultural identities are constantly shaped and reshaped through external appearance and internal imagination. Each persona is a study in character: inspired by people she has met, family members, or composite figures formed from multiple memories. These performative portraits invite the viewer into a playful yet poignant dialogue about perception—of others and of ourselves.
 
Artist Bio
Imogen Gailitis-Gerraty is a self-taught, emerging multimedia artist based in Melbourne, Victoria. Her creative practice is rooted in a fascination with identity, transformation, and the expressive potential of self-presentation. Drawing on her background in photography and performance, she uses her own body as a medium—morphing into personas shaped by memory, familiarity, and imagination.
Through photography, video, costume, makeup, prosthetics, and digital editing, Gailitis-Gerraty explores character and embodiment in humorous, performative, and sometimes uncanny ways. Her work is inspired by people she encounters in everyday life—friends, family, passersby—and the ways identity is performed and perceived. With each transformation, she not only challenges visual norms but invites viewers to re-examine how they see themselves and others. Her evolving practice continues to expand across mediums, including an emerging interest in sculpture and painting.
