Found reclaimed bricks, brick dust, mortar dust, and construction site debris
2024
Artwork Statement
My practice explores how meaning is constructed through the materials and structures that shape everyday urban life. Using reclaimed bricks, dust, and construction debris, I am interested in how discarded matter can be reassembled into new symbolic forms. In a world increasingly organised by efficiency, utility, and systems of control, these fragments offer another way of thinking through play, improvisation, and collective imagination.
Debris takes the form of a performative installation built from broken building materials arranged into a miniature city-like landscape. The work draws on gestures of childhood play, where dust hills, walls, and fragments are constantly shifted and reconfigured. Through this spontaneous process, the installation becomes both a model and a disruption of the built environment.
Rather than presenting the city as fixed or stable, I approach it as something provisional, unstable, and open to reinterpretation. The work invites viewers to reconsider how systems of order are made, inhabited, and unsettled, and how even rubble can become a site for reflection, humour, and critical dialogue.
