Illuminate

Oil on canvas, 115 x 183 cm, 2024

Artwork Statement

In her 2024 oil painting Illuminate, Connie Wong invites viewers into an emotionally charged, radiant world where abstraction becomes a mirror for inner states. The work harnesses a vibrant colour palette dominated by fiery oranges, deep pinks, and luminous purples, creating a dynamic interplay of light and movement. Rather than depicting literal scenes or narratives, the painting emerges from visceral feeling—spontaneous gestures that capture moments of passion, transformation, and transcendence.

In Illuminate, cascading golden lines rise through a haze of violet and cerulean, evoking a sense of emergence or ignition—as if light itself is being born from the canvas. Wong's brushwork is expressive and physical, echoing her influences in action painting and Taoist aesthetics, yet remaining uniquely personal in its execution. The work reflects Wong’s pursuit of the sublime through colour and gesture—each mark on the canvas a record of emotional presence, each composition a space where feeling takes form.

Artist Bio

Connie Wong is an Australian contemporary artist whose practice explores the emotional and sensory possibilities of paint as a physical medium. She completed her Master of Contemporary Art at the Victoria College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, where she exhibited her work in the Graduate Show in November 2024. Deeply influenced by artists such as Tony Smibert AM, Lindy Lee, and Jackson Pollock, Wong’s gestural style merges abstraction with affective resonance.

In her process, colour functions as a form of emotional language—each hue selected not only for visual impact but for the sensations and moods it evokes. Wong’s paintings are immersive, atmospheric, and expressive; they function as arenas where energy is released and emotion materialised. Her brushstrokes resemble a form of spontaneous choreography, what she describes as an “emotional dance” upon the canvas, inviting viewers to sense rather than interpret. Through this approach, Wong aims to create spaces of the sublime—limitless, vibrant, and open to personal reflection.
