Australian National IV. Vegemite Toast

Acrylic on canvas, silkscreen printing, 136 × 185 cm, 2024

Artwork Statement

These works explore national identity through the visual language of Pop Art, drawing on the legacy of Andy Warhol. By replacing Coca-Cola with Vegemite, a distinctly Australian icon, I examine how everyday objects become cultural symbols.
Through repetition and silkscreen techniques, familiar imagery shifts between uniformity and variation, reflecting systems of mass production and collective recognition. At the same time, small disruptions — a smudged print, a bite taken from toast — introduce intimacy and subjectivity.
These gestures move the work beyond branding, revealing how identity is shaped not only through national symbols but also through personal memory and lived experience. Within Distributed Worlds, the works reflect how cultural meaning circulates between public imagery and private moments, constructing a layered sense of belonging.
